Audit: Special education center students too old

The Town Talk reports (http://townta.lk/KwwGXp ) an investigation by Louisiana Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera's office also found that since 2006 the education center has operated a residential group home ? the Transitional Family Life Center ? for 11 former students. Pinecrest is a facility for the developmentally disabled, but has been losing employees and residents as Gov. Bobby Jindal and DHH Secretary Bruce Greenstein move residents into community group homes and lay off state workers. Besides being confined to wheelchairs, special education center students "also have other medical conditions that affect their physical and cognitive functioning abilities," according to the audit report. Louisiana Department of Education Superintendent John White in a letter said the special education center's transitional housing "was never intended to serve as a permanent placement" of handicapped residents.
